Degrees

Microcomputer Support Specialist
This major provides students with expertise in microcomputer applications. It includes a study of hardware and software installation, the use of microcomputer operating systems, networking, programming, systems design, and training. Graduates are prepared to tailor microcomputer hardware and software based on user needs and to provide end-user support and training. Career opportunities include microcomputer consulting, microcomputer marketing, technical support training, and information center employment.
Microsoft Networking Option
The Networking Option provides coverage of all aspects of installing, administering, and managing a local area network. Based on Lakeland's status as a Microsoft Authorized Academic Training Partner (AATP), instruction included in this emphasis prepares students and professionals for the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) exams.

Students starting this program in 2008 should review this flowchart. Students who are currently in the degree or certificate option and are using Windows 2003 should plan on finishing their course of study by Spring 2009.
PC Enterprise Programming Option
This option provides students with a concentration in the C#, Visual Basic, and Java programming languages with emphasis on microcomputer client/server applications.
Database Administrator Option
This program provides students with a specialization in the administration of Oracle or Microsoft SQL databases.

IT Service Support Certificate

This certificate, made up of existing courses, is designed to provide students with a specialization in IT service support. Courses within this certificate help students prepare for 8 different industry certification exams.
Microcomputer Web-Based Collaboration

Collaborate web-based XML data from Microsoft Office applications with web browsers and Microsoft SharePoint Services V3.0 on SharePoint Server 2007.

The SharePoint environment will include creating and collaborating web-based team sites with XML data from InfoPath forms, Excel spreadsheets, Outlook e-mail, Word documents, Access databases, wikis, blogs, workflows for approval and rejection, and RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds.
Administering Converged Technologies Certificate

Course content will provide the knowledge and skills needed in administering converged data systems with vendor neutral software applications. It provides students with the practical experience of administering a converged business communication system with data in a variety of transmissions, such as voice and multimedia from wired and wireless transmissions.

The converged data system will reside on Internet Web sites under Windows Office Communications Server working in conjunction with Windows SharePoint Services to provide updates to images, log files, and device files from voice and multimedia compliant devices. Students will also use third party software products in a Windows environment to analyze wireless transmissions and voice connection performance.

Topics covered are VoIP, IP Telephony, WPANs (IrDA, Bluetooth, UWB, Zigbee), Wireless LANs, WMANs (Freespace, Optics, WiMAX) and WWANs (Cellular phone, satellite) and RFIDs.

Students completing the certificate will be prepared for employment within the areas of Information & Communication Technology Specialist, Home Technology for integrating home communications systems, and Telecommunications Specialist supporting voice, data, and video for businesses.

How long will this take?: The degree programs are designed for two years of full time study. How long you will take depends on how many hours you can safely dedicate to study
What is the difference between a certificate and certification?: The certificate is an academic training program designed to prepare you in one specific skill set. The certification is a vendor-specific or vendor-neutral set of exams that show some degree of proficiency in a specific skill. The certification exams are not given by Lakeland faculty.

Software-Specific Questions

What operating systems are you teaching?: We offer several courses in Windows XP-Professional, Vista, and the networking curriculum uses Windows 2008
Do you offer Exchange Server or SQL-Server?: Yes, we do. We have in SQL-Server (additional information is here), and Exchange Server. We also have courses in other server products.
What about application software?: We offer courses in Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Access, and InfoPath
What about programming software?: While we offer many programming languages, our Microsoft-specific offerings include Visual Basic.NET, C#.NET, ASP.NET, and Visual Basic for Applications.
I understand there is a way I can get Microsoft development software (not Microsoft Office, sorry!) by checking it out of the library?: Yes, you can. Lakeland is a member of the Microsoft Developers Academic Alliance (MSDNAA). Please see the FAQ PAGE
