The Information Technology & Computer Science department is pleased to offer the following new degrees, certificates and courses.

Changes for 2009 - 10!

Computer Science Programming- ITCS

ITCS 1105 HTML Programming I – change the course title to “Web Programming I” and add the use of JavaScript to the course content.  Revisions are being made to reflect changes in technologies and that topics have expanded to include items other than basic HTML.

ITCS 2105 HTML Programming II - change the course title to “Web Programming II”, incorporate some material from ITCS 2180 CGI Programming II, which is being deleted, and change the prerequisites to include ITCS 2140 CGI Programming I (can be taken concurrently).  Revisions are being made to reflect changes in technologies and that topics have expanded to include items other than HTML.  Other changes reflect the inclusion of material from ITCS 2180.

ITCS 2120 JavaScript Programming – change the course description to remove the following sentence “Because of similarity in one module of the course content, students who have successfully competed ITCS 2105 HTML Programming II should not take this course.”  Students have expressed an interest in a deeper study of the material which they can gain by taking both courses.

ITCS 2140 CGI Programming I (2 credits) – change the course title to “CGI Programming”, increase the credits from 2 to 3, change the prerequisites to include ITDB 1400 Introduction to Oracle SQL (can be taken concurrently), update the course description, and incorporate some material from ITCS 2180 CGI Programming II, which is being deleted.  Changes are due to the addition of material from ITCS 2180

ITCS 2180 CGI Programming II – delete this elective course which has never run due to lack of enrollment.  Material from this course is being moved to other existing course (ITCS 2105 and ITCS 2140).

ITCS 2190 Internet Specialist Capstone – update the PHOT prerequisite and add the following to the prerequisites “a grade of ‘C’ or better in all ITCS/ITDB/ITIS/ITON courses required for the degree”

Computer Science/Computer Information Systems Concentration (9259) – update courses within the elective groups for the degree.  These revisions will result in the total credits changing from 70-71 credits to 70-72 credits.

Computer Science/Computer Information Systems Certificate (2591) – replace the requirement of ITCS 2820 Java Programming II with a choice of either ITCS 1810 Visual Basic.NET Programming I or ITCS 1840 Visual C#.NET Programming I.  This revision reflects changes in technologies and career/job outlook.

Interactive Game Programming Concentration (9252) – update the electives list to reflect new, changed, and deleted courses.

Internet Programming Concentration (9256) – revise requirements to reflect course changes and to update the program.  Change total credits from 72 to 71 credits.

Internet Programming Certificate (2561) – revise to reflect changes to courses.  Change total credits from 31 to 32 credits.

PC Enterprise Programming Concentration (9246) - update the electives list to reflect new, changed, and deleted courses.

Database

ITDB 1400 Introduction to Oracle SQL – change the course description to include the following student advisement statement “Although it is not a prerequisite for this course, students may benefit from taking a programming course prior to taking this course.”

ITDB 1425 Oracle Database Fundamentals I – change the course title to “Oracle Database Administration I”, update the course description to reflect the new title of the corresponding Oracle certification exam, update course content to reflect current certification curriculum.  All revisions are due to changes in Oracle certification requirements.

ITDB 2425 Oracle Database Fundamentals II – change the course title to “Oracle Database Administration II”, update the course description to reflect the new title of the corresponding Oracle certification exam, update course content to reflect current certification curriculum.  All revisions are due to changes in Oracle certification requirements.

ITDB 1426 Microsoft SQL Server Implementation – revise course description to reflect changes in the Microsoft certification path and software upgrades.

ITDB 2426 Microsoft SQL Server Administration – change course title to “Microsoft SQL Server Maintenance”, and revise course description to reflect changes in the Microsoft certification path and software upgrades.

ITDB 2430 Oracle Database Performance Tuning – delete the course.  Material from this course has been incorporated into ITDB 1425 and ITDB 2425 in accordance with the certification path outlined by Oracle.

ITDB Database Administration Concentration (9258) – update to reflect course changes and deletions based on the certification path outlined by Oracle.

Database Administration Certificate (2581) – update to reflect course changes and deletions based on the certification path outlined by Oracle. Change total credits from 22 to 20 credits.

Oracle Database Applications Developer Concentration (9257) - update the electives list to reflect new, changed, and deleted courses.

Internet Database Developer Certificate (2562) – delete the certificate due to lack of enrollment.

Information Systems

ITIS 1108 Using an HTML Editor – change the prerequisites to include a pathway for Graphic Design students and revise the course description to indicate the software used in the course.

ITIS 1130 Introduction to Web Design (1 credit) – add a lab component to this lecture only course without changing the total credits, revise the course goals, objectives, and instructional and grading procedures to reflect this addition.  This change is being made to improve student learning by incorporating more hands-on activities.

ITIS Microcomputer Support Specialist Major (9243) - update course options and the electives list to reflect new, changed, and deleted courses.

Web Content Developer Concentration (9251) – revise requirements to reflect course changes and to update the program.

Web Content Developer Certificate (2511) – revise requirements to reflect course changes and to update the program.

Operating System/Networking

Remove the following courses from the catalog.  These courses have recently been replaced by Windows 2008 server courses, but there may still be occasional need for them by area businesses.

ITON 2290 Microsoft Windows Networking Capstone – delete this course that is being offered this semester for the last time.  It will be replaced in the future by ITON 2295 Operating System and Networking Capstone, which was created effective Fall 2008 as part of an upgrade to the Microsoft Networking Concentration.

ITON 2230 Implementing and Managing Microsoft Exchange Server – change the course title to “Microsoft Exchange Server Implementation and Administration” based on the title of the corresponding Microsoft certification exam.

ITON Microsoft Networking Concentration (9249) - update course options and the electives list to reflect new, changed, and deleted courses.

Microsoft Networking Administration Certificate (2492) – delete the certificate which was removed from the catalog effective Fall 2004. Material in this certificate is outdated and no longer needed in the curriculum.

New Courses for 2009-10!

ITIS 0800 Computer Skill Development (1 credit)

This new course is designed for students who have little or no computer experience, or who have not used a computer for a number of years.  The course emphasizes the beginning use of computers and includes the fundamentals of computer operations, creating a simple document using a Word Processing software package, and basic Internet and email usage.  Credit in this course will not satisfy any degree or certificate requirements.  The course grade will be Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory.  The course has been developed to help students achieve a minimal baseline to help them succeed in future courses that require basic computer use and prepare them for taking additional computer courses.

ITIS 1006 Soft Skills in the Information Technology Workplace (1 credit)

This new course is designed to provide students with practical knowledge of the Information Technology workplace.  It focuses on the soft skills needed for employees with emphasis on effective communication and interactions as they apply to IT projects.  It also presents information about IT job positions and organization structure.  This course has been developed based on advisory committee member and employer input.

ITON 1710 Introduction to the Mainframe: z/OS Basics

The course provides an introduction to the basic components of an IBM z-series mainframe. Students will get hands-on experience operating a remotely hosted mainframe using the TSO/ISPF Editor. Helps students prepare for the Test Z01: IBM System z Entry Level for z/OS System Programmer Mastery Test (http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/mastery_tests/ovrZ01.shtml)

Prepare for the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) Exam!  If you have taken the first two Red Hat Academy classes or have earned a Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) certificate, you are ready.  Take both courses during Fall Semester.  ITON2770 is offered Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30-9:30 PM during the first eight-week session, and ITON2780 is offered at the same times during the second eight weeks. ITON 2770 Red Hat Network Applications Administration (2 credits)

Prerequisite: ITON 1750 or RHCT certification or permission of instructor. This course instructs students in the installation and configuration of core networking services, including Apache Web Server, Samba File Server, BIND Domain Name Service, Sendmail Mail Transport Agent, the Network File System, and more. This course, along with ITON 2780 Red Hat Server Security Administration, helps students prepare for the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) Exam.

ITON 2780 Red Hat Server Security Administration (2 credits)

This new course has been developed to expand Lakeland’s Red Hat Academy program.  Along with ITON 2770, it will help students prepare for the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) exam.

New Programs & Certificates!

Implementing Converged Technologies Certificate

This Certificate consists of 21 credit hours of existing courses, six credit hours of CISCO networking courses and 15 credit hours of Information Technology courses. The Certificate is based on a shifting industry demand for more digital knowledge in implementing converged technologies: the delivery of data, voice and multimedia over the same converged network. This Certificate also helps students prepare for Cisco certification.

Students will be prepared for employment in the following fields: Wireless Communications Specialist, Information & Communication Technology Specialist, Home Technology for integrating home communication systems, Convergence Specialist supporting and integrating voice, data, and video for a business.

Job level is entry to mid-level technicians (install, maintain, repair hardware and software functionality). Job roles are technical support personnel, data and telecommunication resellers & solution providers, Sales and Support personnel, end-user companies merging IT and telecommunications personnel.

Mainframe Systems Fundamentals Certificate

This Certificate consists of nine semester hours, six semester hours of existing courses in Information Technology and three semester hours of a new course ITON 1710 Introduction to the Mainframe z/OS Basics. Students with equivalent knowledge and experience may request to have the six semester hours of prerequisites, Computers and Information Processing & Programming Logic, waived. Upon completion of this Certificate, students will be prepared for an entry level position in IBM Mainframe Systems Operations or Programming.

IT Service Support Certificate

This new certificate, made up of existing courses, is designed to provide students with a specialization in IT service support. Courses within this certificate help students prepare for 8 different industry certification exams.

IT Security Certificate

This new certificate, made up of existing courses, is designed to provide students with a specialization in IT security.
