Success at LCCREAL ESTATE COURSES - LAKELAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Eligibility to take the real estate agent license exam is possible after completion of Lakeland’s four pre-licensure courses. Students may complete all four courses during one semester, or schedule classes over a longer period of time. Flexible class schedules include convenient eight week semester sessions and five-week summer sessions.

Q What do I have to do to become a licensed real estate associate in Ohio?

A  
  1. You must be honest, truthful and of good reputation.
  2. You must be at least 18 years old.
  3. You must be sponsored by an Ohio Broker.
  4. You must not have been convicted of a felony or crime or moral turpitude, adjudged by a court to have violated any civil rights laws regarding real estate within the past two years or violated any rules of the Ohio Division of Real Estate. If you have been found to have done so, you must have satisfied the Superintendent that you will not violate such laws or rules again.
  5. If you were born after 1950, you must have a high school diploma or its equivalent as recognized by the Ohio Department of Education.
  6. Complete the education requirements:

    • Real Estate Principles and Practices (40 hours)
    • Ohio Real Estate Law, including instruction in civil rights, housing discrimination and desegregation problems (40 hours)
    • Real Estate Appraisal (20 hours)
    • Real Estate Finance (20 hours)

Please note: Any person who has not been licensed as a real estate salesperson or broker within a four-year period immediately preceding his/her current application for the salesperson’s exam must have completed the above classroom instruction within a 10-year period immediately preceding the current salesperson application. This education must have been completed at an institution of higher education that awards a degree in at least a two-year program [i.e. an associate degree].

The above courses must be taken at an institution of higher education, such as Lakeland Community College, which is defined as a school which actually awards a degree in at least a two-year program (i.e. an associate degree). Lakeland Community College's real estate curriculum is fully approved by the Ohio Department of Real Estate. The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredits Lakeland Community College.

Q What about becoming a real property appraiser?

A   The law concerning the minimum requirements to obtain license/certification as a licensed appraiser is in place. Current requirements may be obtained from:

Q I cannot afford to pay for the courses. Is financial aid available?

A   Contact Lakeland's Financial Office further information about grant and scholarship opportunities. Additionally, the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing has an educational fund that sponsors a Student Loan program.

Q What do I need to do in addition to completing the course work?

A   After completion of pre-licensure education and other requirements, you must submit an application to the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing BEFORE scheduling an examination. Application forms may be obtained online at

An application fee of $60 (check payable to the Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing) must accompany the application along with an official transcript verifying successful completion of the required course work. (The application fee for the brokerage application is $100 and the qualifications vary as well.)

There is a separate examination fee that is payable directly to the testing vendor.

Q What documentation do I need to complete my application?

A   A copy of your official transcript or certificate of completion and an application fee of $60 must accompany your application. Do not submit your application until completion of all of the required real estate courses.

Q Where do I mail my completed application?

A   All real estate applications must be submitted to the Columbus, OH office of the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing at 77 South High Street, 20th Floor, Columbus, OH 43215-6133, telephone, 614/466-4100. Regardless of the location of your examination, the application must be sent to the Columbus office.

Q What do I need to know about scheduling the exam?

A  

Once your application is processed and accepted, your information will be sent to the testing vendor. You will receive a Notice of Eligibility Letter and a copy of the Real Estate Salesperson and Broker Candidate Information Bulletin. The Real Estate Salesperson and Broker Candidate Information Bulletin contains complete information about scheduling your exam as well as tips for preparing for your exam, examination study materials, and examination descriptions.

You may visit the website of PSI, the testing vendor, to schedule your exam and to download a copy of the Candidate Information Bulletin.

There is an examination fee that will be paid directly to the testing vendor.
