The Client's Bill of Rights
General Massage Clinic clients have the right to
- be treated with courtesy and respect in a safe, clean facility which meets the standards of care for the practice of massage therapy in an academic setting.
- be informed of the fee schedule and appointments.
- have the appointment time reasonably observed.
- receive accurate and current information regarding the massage services.
- expect high quality care.
- be referred to their Primary Care Physician for other possible needed diagnosis or treatments which will promote health and wellness.
- have confidentiality of all information pertinent to medical history and medical status maintained at all times.
- give informed consent prior to the initiation of services.
- participate in decisions regarding the general massage session, having been made aware of service limitations, such as the need to avoid certain areas of the body due to injury or skin condition, or the need or desire to use a modified level of pressure, and the expected outcomes of service options.
- have access to the client’s own massage records according to the Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility (HIPAA) Standards.
The services will be performed by a Massage Therapy student under the supervision of a Licensed Massage Therapist. Services performed are limited to general relaxation massage and do not include therapeutic techniques. Lakeland Massage Therapy students are not yet licensed therapists and therefore are not allowed to perform corrective procedures or to treat medical conditions of any kind.
Length of Appointments and Health History
General Massage sessions last approximately 55 minutes. Clients new to the clinic should arrive at least 10 minutes early to their first appointment, as they must complete a health history form prior to receiving a massage. New clients must bring a list of whatever medications they are taking. Clients under a doctor’s care for certain health conditions may be required to obtain the doctor’s permission for massage prior to receiving a massage. Without a doctor’s permission, these clients may be turned away at their first session and be required to reschedule their appointment after obtaining the doctor’s permission. This unfortunate inconvenience serves to protect the health and safety of the client.

Infectious Disease Information
Standard Precautions is an infection control practice adhered to in order to prevent and control the spread of infection. All health career students and faculty are required to utilize Standard Precautions when caring for patients and when handling any body fluids or substances. Sheets are changed and massage tables are disinfected with a bleach solution after each massage, and clinicians wash their hands thoroughly before and after each massage to diminish risks of transmission of blood borne pathogens. Protocols of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Ohio State Medical Board are followed.
Cancellation of Appointments
Massage Therapy students have clinical requirements to fulfill. They depend on YOU to help them in fulfilling these clinical requirements. If for some reason you cannot keep your appointment, please follow the cancellation procedures outlined in the Return Policy in the General Massage Appointment Store (see link) at least 24 hours prior to your appointment to reschedule an appropriate time. This courtesy allows your appointment to be given to another client. Because of the strict schedule, missed appointments, excessive cancellations or tardiness cannot be tolerated. Clients may be dismissed if missed appointments, excessive cancellations or tardiness becomes habitual behavior. The student's learning process and completion of clinic requirements for graduation and Medical Board examinations are jeopardized when a client does not follow through with appointments. Your cooperation will allow us to better serve you.
Tardiness
Massage appointments run on schedule for approximately 55 minutes. A student is instructed to wait 20 minutes for the client in case the client is running late. After this time, it is assumed that the client is not coming and arrangements are made for the student to work on someone else. Clients arriving more than 20 minutes late to their appointment are considered to be no-shows and therefore will receive neither their scheduled massage nor a refund of money paid.
