 Massage
Therapy is a healing art as well as
a science. It involves the knowledge
of anatomy and physiology in the hands-on
treatment of muscles and soft tissues.
It may also apply adjunctive therapies
to positively affect the health and
well-being of the client. Massage Therapists
require a balance of academic and technical
knowledge, clinical skills, sensitivity,
and awareness. Essential skills needed
for the career include: manual dexterity,
physical strength and stamina, working
well with clients, listening, problem-solving,
organizing time and tasks, business
sense, ethical behavior, maintaining
confidentiality, networking, and attracting
clients. Massage Therapists must also
demonstrate compassion and concern
for the client and a desire to improve
the client’s health status. Massage
Therapists rely on repeat customers
for job security and financial success,
as many are self-employed or have independent
contractor status and may be responsible
for attracting and retaining their
own clients.
Massage Therapists practice in a variety
of settings, such as private offices
or massage clinics, chiropractor’s
or doctor’s offices, holistic health
clinics, health clubs and fitness centers,
spas and salons, nursing homes and hospitals,
sports medicine facilities and with sports
teams, corporations, and clients’ homes.
