THE LAKELAND
COMMUNITY COLLEGE CIVIC JAZZ ORCHESTRA was
organized in 1973 under the direction of
Charles Frank. The group performed for the
Second Annual Lakeland Jazz Festival in May,
1974. Prior to that, the college had supported
the Lakeland Jazz Forum, directed by George
Parrish. In keeping with the purpose of the
other college community music groups, The
Jazz Ensemble was founded to provide jazz
performance opportunities for Lakeland Community
College students and community musicians.
Following Charles Frank's appointment as
Executive Director of the Fine Arts Association,
Dr. Dan McCarthy was added to the Lakeland
Community College music faculty and became
Director of the Jazz Ensemble, continuing
until 1991 when he accepted a position in
Indiana. Ernie Krivda became Director of
the Lakeland Jazz Orchestra, which continued
to perform for concerts and the Jazz Festival
through 2002. Larry A. Smith, was appointed
to lead the group in 2002 and under Mr. Smith's
direction, the Jazz Orchestra has performed
at Lakeland's Jazz Festivals, at the Great
Lakes Mall Holiday Concert Series, as guests
of the Lakeland Civic Band (directed by Charles
Frank) and at the 1st Annual Madison Jazz
Festival in 2005. In 1987, the Lakeland Community
College Jazz Ensemble was honored by invitation
to present a concert at the Ohio Music Education
Association Conference in Cincinnati. The
current Director, Dave Sterner, was appointed
to lead the group in 2008.
