Social Science & Public Service Technologies Events Calendar

Lakeland's social sciences provide students with a concept-based overview of the social sciences and the contribution they make to improved understanding of human activity and behavior.  Areas of study in the social sciences are economics, geography, history, political science, psychology and sociology.

The common bond in the service technologies is that they are people oriented.  Those who choose these fields share the satisfaction of helping others and serving the community.  Generally, jobs in the service technologies are in the areas of teaching and child care, public safety (from law enforcement and corrections to fire protections), recreation, and social and community services.  Professional and para-professional opportunities to work in these fields are open to those who qualify.

Date: Thursday, May 21, 2009 - Tuesday, September 1, 2009
Email: bhamovitch@lakelandcc.edu
Description: What Are Learning Communities?
Two or more classes are linked together. The classes are taught by two different instructors; however, exactly the same students attend both classes. The instructors link the content of the courses through common themes and concepts.

Who May Join a Learning Community?
Any student may join a Learning Community — provided that he or she meets the prerequisites for those classes.

What Are the Benefits of Joining a Learning Community?
Students develop stronger study partnerships and make new friends. Students also enjoy the ways in which the instructors connect the material from two different classes.

How Can I Join a Learning Community?
You can register for Learning Community classes the same way that you register for any class. You must register for both classes at the same time.

Will I Receive a Separate Grade for Each Class?
Yes, each instructor will provide you with a separate grade for each class. Passing one does not depend on passing the other.
