The Auburn Career Center and Lakeland
Community College have joined forces to create The
Northeast Ohio Culinary Institute (NOCI)
Lakeland Community College and
the Auburn Career Center now offer the Northeast
Ohio Culinary Institute (NOCI), offering a two-year
program in culinary arts.
Led by Chef Bob Lubecky, students
learn the culinary secrets of the trade ranging
from creating the perfect radish rose to baking
a delicate pastry plus they'll get to participate
in classical cuisine and food show competition.
Students will also learn the business side of culinary
arts such as food purchasing, sanitation and equipment.
The food service industry's needs
for educated and skilled workers will continue to
grow nationally during the rest of this decade.
The employment outlook for Lake County and the State
of Ohio forecasts a continuing rate of growth. Restaurant
manager, baker, pastry chef, food production worker,
caterer, line cook and chef are positions that are
representative of employment opportunities in the
industry.
NOCI is operated by the Adult
Education Department of Auburn Career Center in
collaboration with Lakeland Community College. Culinary
arts core courses are provided by NOCI at Auburn
Career Center while general education, basic technical
and elective courses are provided by Lakeland Community
College on the Kirtland, Madison or Wickliffe campuses.
The Institute offers a two-year
program in Culinary Arts. Students who complete
the program will receive the NOCI certificate and
will be awarded 30 semester credit hours which can
be applied toward an Associate of Technical Studies
(ATS) Degree in Culinary Arts at Lakeland. Students
will complete a minimum of 35 additional credit
hours in prescribed general education and related
core courses at Lakeland to earn their associate's
degree.
Chef Bob Lubecky graduated from
the culinary arts program at Auburn, then continued
his studies at the Culinary Institute of America
in Hyde Park, NY where he earned a bachelor's degree
of professional studies in culinary arts management.
He also studied at Le Cordon Bleu in London. Before
joining NOCI, Lubecky was the Executive Sous Chef
at The Country Club in Pepper Pike.
Lubecky says, "I want to set a
high level of standards for the students. NOCI will
be noted as one of the finest culinary institutes.
We will be distinguished by the levels of academics
and hands on experience and by our high level of
professionalism."
Doug Daugherty, Adult Education
Director at Auburn Career Center, says there is
a need for a post-secondary culinary arts program
in Lake County. "We've already established a successful
program at Auburn so it seems like a natural fit
to take it to the next level."
