Biological Digital Imaging

Digital technologies are revolutionizing imaging applications in Biology. Why endure time and expense to process film, only to learn an imaging opportunity was missed. Digital technology allows image capture, evaluation, and manipulation, within minutes. What better way to assure you get the best image. Transient biological events or elusive subjects still require effort but digital imaging technology has evened the playing field.

I teach Biological Digital Imaging because I strongly believe biologists, educators, naturalists, and others should use images to foster a better understanding of the intricate, fragile world of nature. A little knowledge of biological subjects, phenology, and sound photographic technique provides opportunity for limitless biological photographs. I emphasize technique over esthetics and creativity because technique more strongly determines success in imaging. Esthetics and creativity come naturally as there are few things more striking or beautiful than biological subjects.

Welcome to my site and I hope you will consider taking a class with me. In early summer you might consider the University of Minnesota Itasca Summer Program for Field Biology. I teach a 4-5 week course in Biological Imaging in support of field biology classes at Itasca State Park. This is a beautiful, ecologically diverse place. In my eyes it stands as one of the best places to study photography. At Lakeland Community College, I am offering spring or summer classes of this type. These could include optional trips to biologically diverse places like Costa Rica or the Galapagos. For college educators, I offer a workshop through the NSF funded Chautauqua Program. Stay in touch and let me know if you are interested in a class or have questions about Biological Digital Imaging. You can contact me via E-mail!
