Birds possess beautiful irridescent colors for displays. This composite was made to show how the male ruby-throated hummingbird uses irridescence on throat feathers to flash signals to rival males and females. The irridescence is determined by the angle of light hitting the feathers. A simple postural shift with feathers raised can occur in the blink of an eye. The images below are two sequential video frames spanning 1/30 second. |
