The Lakeland Nonprofit and Public Service Center will host “Legal or Liable? What Every Nonprofit Manager and Board Member Should Know ”on Thursday, December 6 from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. on the college's main campus, 7700 Clocktower Drive, Kirtland, 44094, in building A room 2100. Networking and a continental breakfast begin at 8 a.m.
Presenters will be David M. Reape, CPA, senior manager with Ciuni & Panichi, Inc., and Charles M. Miller, J.D., CNM, senior director of planned giving at Case Western Reserve University and a former Ohio assistant attorney general (Charitable Section). The workshop is expressly designed to help board members and nonprofit managers understand how they and their organizations can avoid liability. An array of legal and accounting topics will be covered, including: common reasons nonprofit organizations get sued (and how to prevent that from happening); laws that govern fundraising activities, including gambling and charity benefits; fiduciary and other duties; risk management; record keeping, reporting, and disclosure requirements; campaign and lobbying rules; and unrelated business income.
