Q: What does STEM mean?
A: The four letters stand for Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics.
2. Q: Who can participate?
A: The program is open to 11th and 12th grade
students with a 2.5 grade point average and
above, as well as females and minorities
who are significantly under-represented in
STEM education and careers
3. Q: How many
students will be accepted into the Academy?
A: We have funding for a maximum of 50 students,
distributed over a five county area (Lake,
Geauga, Cuyahoga, and Ashtabula).
4. Q: What
classes will be offered for the program?
A: Two courses are offered:
• Everyday Chemistry that focuses on scientific
method of inquiry, atomic and molecular structure,
phases of matter, chemical and physical changes,
acids and bases, and polymers.
• Capstone that enables students to integrate
previously learned concepts into broader theories
and to build upon that knowledge as they explore
a hypothesis through research, interviews,
fieldwork and inquiry-based learning.
5. Q:
What are the daily activities during the residential
experience?
A: The primary activity is a chemistry problem-based
project.
6. Q: How many credits do students
receive participating in the program?
A: Everyday Chemistry – 3 credits and
Capstone – 2 credits
7. Q: How many classes
does a student take?
A: Each student must enroll for both courses
at the program for which (s)he is accepted.
8. Q: What is the overall schedule of the
program?
A: There will be a three-week summer course
requiring an overnight residency at John Carroll.
The Capstone course will convene one Saturday
each month from September – April.
