At
orientation sessions, successful student leaders
provide small groups of new students and their guests
with information about the College and the support
services available. Information about services
includes: Child care on Campus; Police and safety
issues; College policies; using offices such as Counseling,
Career Services, Financial Aid, the Women's Center,
the Men's Resource Center, Student Activities and
the Learning Center; review of the Student Handbook
and Calendar; and student involvement opportunities.
New students and their guests
have opportunities to ask questions of both the student
leaders and the staff at sessions, as well as to
visit College offices to conduct business. Students
may opt to register for classes or make schedule
changes at the Admissions and Registration area,
talk with someone in the Financial Aid Office, or
register their child for Child Minders. Tours
of the Campus are also made available to participants
and can often be tailored to individual requests.
While all sessions are open
to any new student, each term there are several sessions
designed for special populations. A session designed
for women returning to college after several years
away, or beginning college for the first time, is
held in cooperation with the Women's Center. A
session geared to men returning to college after
several years away, or beginning college for the
first time, is held in cooperation with the Men's
Resource Center. A session is held at LCC-East
in Madison for students attending classes at that
facility.
New students are encouraged
to bring a guest with them to the orientation session. Guests
may be a parent, spouse, child, friend or significant
other. Bringing a guest can make the experience
of starting college less intimidating and provides
new students with someone in their life who can support
them in their academic progress.
