Cabot, Spellacy Earn All-Conference Honors

KIRTLAND, Ohio (October 30, 2014) – Freshman Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) and classmate Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) have been named to the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) All-Conference team as voted on by league coaches.  Cabot was selected to the first team while Spellacy was named to the second team after record-setting seasons with the Lakers.

Cabot finished the year with 1,184 assists, the second most in a single season in the history of Lakeland women's volleyball.  The freshman played and started in all 33 matches and finished ninth in the nation (NJCAA Division II) and second in the OCCAC in assists.  She also ranked 12th in the country in assists per set with a 9.25 average.  She set a career-high with 54 helpers against Cincinnati State on October 11 and eclipsed the 40-assist mark in 13 matches this season. 

Spellacy posted one of the most prolific offensive seasons in program history with 421 kills in 32 matches.  The outside hitter ends the season ranked second in single-season kills, trailing only Jacki Hruby's 2001 school record of 460.  Spellacy ranks fourth in the OCCAC in kills and second in the conference with 200 in 14 league matches.  She also sits at 14th in the nation in kills and 24th in kills per set.  She set a career-high with 23 against Sinclair on September 19 and posted double-digit kills in all but four matches in her first collegiate season.

Lakeland finished the year 14-19 overall and 5-9 in OCCAC competition.  The Lakers were a freshmen-laden team in 2014 and look poised to compete with the conference's best next year.

Lakers End Season with Weekend Split

PIQUA, Ohio (October 25,2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team suffered a hard-fought, five-set loss to Sinclair on Friday night before closing out the 2014 season with a 3-1 victory over host Edison to finish the year 14-19 overall and 5-9 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play.  The Lakers five conference wins are the most since the 2009 season when they went 6-6.  LCC finished sixth in the league this year.

Freshman Grace Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) posted a career-high 17 kills in each match to pace the Lakeland offense.  Classmate Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) finished with 35 for the weekend to move her season total to 421.  Spellacy ends the year with the second most kills in a single season in program history behind Jacki Hruby's 2001 total of 460.

Carly Cabot's (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) busy weekend included 102 assists over the course of the two matches.  She finished one assist shy of matching a career-high when she handed out 53 in the loss to Sinclair.  Cabot ends the year second on the all-time, single-season assists list with 1,184.  The freshman setter was also second in the conference with 563 in 14 league matches.

Jessica Fontana (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) chipped in 24 kills with just one error over the weekend.  She ends the year with a team-best 140 blocks to finish fourth in program history.

McDowell, Lakers Celebrate Sophomore Night with Sweep

KIRTLAND, Ohio (October 22, 2014) – Erin McDowell (Kirtland, Ohio / Kirtland) posted eight digs and served 12 points in the final set alone to propel Lakeland to a 3-0 victory over visiting Cuyahoga on Sophomore Night Wednesday evening.  McDowell, the Lakers' lone upperclassman, played in her final home game as a member of the Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team.

The sophomore outside hitter helped Lakeland (13-18, 4-8 OCCAC) race out to an 11-3 early in the deciding set after taking the first two 25-17 and 25-23.  After the Challengers fought back to make it 20-16, McDowell stepped to the line and served out four of the match's final five points to secure the victory.

The night also saw a Lakeland record fall as freshman Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) set the single-season program record for digs with 634.  The freshman libero surpassed Lynn Wervey's 1990 record of 625.

Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) and Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) posted 13 kills apiece while freshman setter Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out a team-high 40 assists in the win. 

Lakeland returns to action on Friday and Saturday when they take on Sinclair and Edison, respectively, in the final two matches of the 2014 season.

Lakers Split Four Matches at Pink Out Tournament

CINCINNATI, Ohio (October 18, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team defeated Lorain County and Kellogg but suffered defeats to a pair of nationally-ranked teams in Mott and Oakland to finish 2-2 at the Pink Out Tournament hosted by Cincinnati State over the weekend.

The Lakers opened tournament play with a 3-0 win over Kellogg on Friday afternoon before falling to No. 17 Mott, 3-0, in the nightcap.  Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) and Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) led the way offensively with 17 and 16 kills, respectively, while Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 47 assists on the day.

On day two Lakeland rallied from a set down to defeat Lorain County 3-1 before suffering a 3-0 loss to No. 14 Oakland to close out the tournament.  Elizabeth Spellacy registered a team-high 19 kills against Lorain and 17 in just three sets against Oakland.  Grace Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) chipped in 14 kills on 29 attempts in the win over the Commodores while Carly Cabot recorded 78 assists on the day.

Lakeland is back in action on Wedneday (Oct. 22) when it plays host to Cuyahoga for the final home match of the season at 6 p.m.

Women Drop Conference Match to Lorain County

ELYRIA, Ohio  (October 15, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team took set one at host Lorain County before losing three straight sets to suffer a 3-1 defeat on Wednesday night.  The Lakers (10-16, 3-8 OCCAC) return to action this weekend for the Cincinnati State Pink Out Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Freshman Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) led the way with 13 kills and 13 digs in the loss.  Classmate Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) added 10 kills and 10 digs while Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) dished out 31 assists.

Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) posted a team-high 33 digs to pace the Lakers defensively. 

Lakeland will play four non-conference matches over the weekend in Cincinnati.  LCC opens the round-robin tournament with Kellogg and Mott on Friday before taking on Lorain County and nationally-ranked Oakland on Saturday.

Volleyball Suffers Conference Losses to Columbus, Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio (October 10, 2014) – Visiting Lakeland Community College suffered a 3-0 defeat to nationally-ranked Columbus State before falling to Cincinnati State, 3-2, in a back and forth conference match on Saturday morning.  The Lakers drop to 10-15 overall and 3-7 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play with the losses.

Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) erupted for a team-high 19 kills with just three errors on 38 attempts while Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) and Grace Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) added 15 and 14, respectively, against Cincinnati State.

Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) set a new career high with 54 assists while Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) also set a new personal mark with a career-high 45 digs. 

The Lakers look to get back on track when they travel to Elyria on Wednesday for an OCCAC matchup with Lorain County at 6 p.m.

Lakers Clipped by Nationally-Ranked Express

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (October 8, 2014) – The Lakeland women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of nationally-ranked Owens on Wednesday night to fall to 10-13 on the season and 3-5 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play.  The Express, who entered the match as the nation's 16th-ranked team, improved to 23-8 overall and 8-1 in the OCCAC.

Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) paced the Lakers with 13 kills and 10 digs while Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) chipped in nine and nine.

Grace Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) fell just short of matching a career-high with eight kills in the setback.

Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 41 assists to move her season total to 802.  The freshman setter currently ranks fourth in program history in single-season assists and is 123 away from moving into third place.

Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) registered a team-high 30 digs in the loss.

Lakeland returns to action on Friday for a showdown with No. 10 Columbus State.  The Cougars enter the match undefeated at 19-0 (8-0 OCCAC).

Lakeland Goes 1-1 in Michigan

KIRTLAND, Ohio (October 4, 2014) – The Lakeland women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches in Michigan over the weekend, sweeping Lake Michigan 3-0 before falling to host Oakland 3-0. 

Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 38 assists in just three sets in the victory over Lake Michigan.  Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) and Jessica Fontana (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) led the way offensively with 12 and nine kills, respectively.  Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) added eight on 21 attempts.  

Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) posted a team-high 11 digs while Spellacy and freshman Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) chipped in 10 and nine, respectively, as the Lakers moved to 10-11 on the season.

Oakland raced out to a 25-10 victory in the first set and never looked back en route to their seventh straight win.  The Raiders, winners of 13 of their last 14 matches, moved to 15-6 overall with the win.

Liz Spellacy led the way with five kills and six digs while Carly Cabot handed out 14 assists in the setback.  Spellacy and Curtis, who finished with three kills in the match, continued their pursuit of Lakeland's single-season kills record.  Entering Monday's non-conference match against Notre Dame College JV, Spellacy sits in eighth with 287 kills while Curtis moved into the top-10 and sits at tenth with 258. 

The Lakers face a pivotal week of conference matches after Monday's showdown with the Falcons.  Lakeland travels to nationally-ranked Owens on Wednesday before hitting the road for a meeting with nationally-ranked Columbus State on Friday.  LCC closes out the week with another conference match at Cincinnati State on Saturday morning.

Lakers Sweep Notre Dame JV

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 30, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team closed out the month of September with a 3-0 victory over visiting Notre Dame College JV on Tuesday night inside the Athletic & Fitness Center.

The Lakers improved to 9-11 overall with the victory and will travel to Auburn Hills, Michigan this weekend for a tri-match hosted by Oakland Community College.

Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) led the way with 11 kills in just two sets as she continued to climb the Lakeland record books.  The freshman outside hitter is currently ninth on the all-time, single-season kills list with 270 with 14 matches remaining in the regular season.  She chases Jacki Hruby's 2001 record of 460 kills in a season. 

Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) chipped in six kills while Erin McDowell (Kirtland, Ohio / Kirtland) and Jessica Fontana (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) added five apiece.

Freshman Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 28 assists while classmate Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) paced the defensive effort with a team-high 24 digs.

Lakeland takes on Oakland and Lake Michigan on Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m., respectively.

Lakers Finish 2-2 at Raider Challenge

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (September 28, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team went 2-2 at the Raider Challenge over the weekend, defeating Schoolcraft and Genesee and suffering losses to Lawrence Tech and nationally-ranked Oakland.  The Lakers currently sit at 8-11 overall.

Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) posted a team-high 20 kills while Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 51 assists in the victory over Genesee.  The win came on the heels of a four-set loss against the nation's fourth ranked team.  Lakeland took set one, 25-21, against No. 4 Oakland before falling 9-25, 23-25, and 16-25 in the ensuing three sets. 

The Lakers return to action on Monday Wednesday when they play host to Notre Dame College JV at 6 p.m.

Women Rally From Two Sets Down, Fall in Five to Lorain 

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 20, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team suffered a loss in five sets to visiting Sinclair on Friday evening before responding with a 3-1 victory over Edison on Saturday morning in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) action over the weekend.

Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) posted a team-high 23 kills while classmate Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) added 19.  Spellacy and freshman Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) led the way defensively with 23 and 32 digs, respectively, while Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 47 assists in the setback.

On Saturday morning, Lakeland bounced back with a win (21-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-18) against Edison to move to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in league play.  Spellacy and Curtis combined for 24 kills and 20 digs in the victory while Grace Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) and Jessica Fontana (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) contributed nine apiece. 

Carly Cabot dished out 28 assists in the win as Lakeland snapped a two match skid.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday (Sept. 27) when they compete in the Raider Challenge hosted by Oakland Community College.

Women Rally From Two Sets Down, Fall in Five to Lorain 

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 17, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team erased a two-set deficit to force a fifth and deciding set against Lorain County before ultimately falling to the Commodores, 3-2, on Wednesday night inside the Athletic & Fitness Center.  With the setback Lakeland stalls at 5-8 overall and 2-3 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play.

Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) registered a career-high 50 assists in the loss, surpassing her previous mark of 44 set over the weekend against St. Clair County.  Through 13 matches this season, the freshman setter leads the OCCAC in assists with 440 and is second in conference-only matches with 190.

Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) and Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) contributed 17 and 16 kills, respectively, in the loss.  The duo are ranked third and fourth, respectively, in the OCCAC in kills.

Freshman Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) paced the defensive effort with 19 kills while classmate Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) added 15 for the Lakers.

Lakeland returns to action this weekend for a pair of league matches against Sinclair (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Edison (Saturday, 11 a.m.) inside the Athletic & Fitness Center.

Lakers Split Four Matches at McBride Memorial Tournament

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 13, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team finished 2-2 at the 12th Annual Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament over the weekend to move to 5-7 overall on the year.  The Lakers opened with a five-set win over Genesee before falling to Mott in four sets on Friday.  Lakeland was outlasted by St. Clair County in five sets on Saturday morning but responded with a 3-0 victory over Mercyhurst North East to wrap up play in the afternoon.

In all, the Athletic & Fitness Center was home to 20 matches over the course of two days in one of the marquee events of the year.  The annual tournament, which features teams from Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York, has been a fixture on campus since 2003 and is played in honor of former Lakeland volleyball player Shannon Lee McBride. 

Each year the annual Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving member(s) of the team on day one of the tournament.  This year's recipients were freshmen Krista Curtis (second from left) and Casey Timko (center).  Curtis, a Willoughby native and Willoughby South grad, is majoring in nursing while Timko, a Wickliffe native and graduate of Villa Angela-St. Joseph, is an engineering major.

Lakeland Volleyball Hosts 12th Annual McBride Tournament

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 9, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team will host the 12th Annual Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament on Friday, September 12 and Saturday, September 13.  The tournament will feature volleyball teams from Ohio, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania for two days of competition inside the Athletics and Fitness Center.

Volleyball Comes Up Short Against Owens

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 10, 2014) – Visiting Owens moved to 4-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play following a 3-0 victory over host Lakeland on Wednesday night inside the Athletic & Fitness Center.  The Express moved to 11-4 overall while the Lakers stalled at 3-5 overall and 2-2 in league play entering this weekend's Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament on campus.

Freshman outside hitter Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) paced Lakeland with ten kills on 29 attempts while classmate Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) contributed 22 assists in the setback.

Freshman Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) nearly matched a career-high with 16 digs in her first start of the season at libero.

Lakers Hold Off Cincinnati State in Five Sets

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 6, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team took the first two sets against visiting Cincinnati State before holding on for a hard-fought, 3-2 victory in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) action Saturday morning.  The Lakers appeared to be on their way to an easy victory before the Surge rallied in sets three and four to force a fifth set.  Lakeland responded with a 16-14 win in the deciding set to improve to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Freshman outside hitter Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) led the way offensively with 21 kills while classmate Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) added 13.  Freshman setter Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out a career-high 44 assists in the victory.

Defensively four players reached double figures in digs, led by 34 from freshman libero Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South).  Curtis added 21 while freshman Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) posted a career-high 17 to give Lakeland a lift.

The Lakers host Owens (10-4, 3-0 OCCAC) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a pivotal conference match.

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 5, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team took first place Columbus State to four sets before falling to the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) leaders, 3-1, on Friday night.  The OCCAC loss was the first of the young season for Lakeland after opening league play with a victory over Cuyahoga on Wednesday.  The Lakers return to action on Saturday when they host Cincinnati State at 11 a.m.

Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) led the way with 15 kills while Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 30 assists.  Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) and Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) led the way defensively with 13 digs apiece in the loss.

Lakeland Rallies Past Cuyahoga in Conference Opener

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ohio (September 3, 2014) – Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) posted a career-high 18 kills with just three errors to help the Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team open conference play with a 3-1 victory over Cuyahoga on Wednesday night.  The Lakers improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play entering a pair of league matches this weekend.

The freshman Spellacy added 10 digs while classmate Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) contributed 13 kills and 14 digs in the victory.  After dropping the first set 25-17, Lakeland rallied for three straight wins (25-20, 25-22, 26-24) to close out the match.  Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out a career-high 44 assists while Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) registered a career-high 36 digs for Lakeland.

The Lakers return to action on Friday (Sept. 5) when they play host to Columbus State at 6 p.m. before hosting Cincinnati State on Saturday (Sept. 6) at 11 a.m.

Lakers Finish 1-3 at Owens Invitational

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (August 30, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team dispatched Kellogg Community College in the season opener before losing a trio of non-conference matches to close out the Owens Invitational over the weekend.  The Lakers (1-3) return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Cuyahoga for their conference opener beginning at 6 p.m.

Four players posted double-digit kills, led by 12 from freshman Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood), to push Lakeland past Kellogg (23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-19) in the tournament's first match.  Freshman Mary Prosuch (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) chipped in 11 kills while classmate Jessica Fontana (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) added ten to go along with 12 blocks.  Freshman Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) added ten kills and ten digs in the victory.

Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 25 assists while Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) recorded a team-high 15 digs for the Lakers.

The Lakers dropped to 1-1 overall after falling to Jackson (16-25, 22-25, 21-25) on Friday night despite 21 assists from Carly Cabot and eight kills from Krista CurtisJordan Talevski and Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) paced the defensive effort with nine and eight digs, respectively.

Lakeland 1, Lansing 3

Krista Curtis' 15 kills were not enough for Lakeland, which forced a fourth set before ultimately falling to Lansing (22-25, 16-25, 25-18, 21-25) on Saturday afternoon.  Carly Cabot dished out 29 assists with more than half going to the freshman Curtis. Jaclyn Butera (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) posted a career-high nine kills on 12 attempts while Danielle Talevski registered 20 digs in the loss.

Lakeland 1, Muskegon 3

Krista Curtis recorded a career-high 19 kills to go along with nine digs and seven blocks in the tough loss to Muskegon (15-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-27).  The freshman outside hitter was aided by a career-high 38 assists from classmate Carly Cabot.  Freshmen Liz Spellacy (10 kills, 16 digs) and Jessica Fontana (11 kills) paced the offensive effort while Jordan Talevski led the way defensively with a career-high 31 digs.

Former Laker Oani Named Head Coach at Chagrin Falls

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio (July 1, 2014) – Former Lakeland Community College women's volleyball player Leona Oani has been named head coach of the girls' varsity volleyball team at Chagrin Falls High School.  Oani, who spent last season as an assistant at Streesboro High School, inherits a team which went 14-8-1 last year and lost in the sectional final to Hathaway Brown.

Oani played one season under former head coach Jessica VanHorn, helping the Lakers to 14 wins including six Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) victories in 2009.  As a freshman libero, Oani led the team with 350 digs.

The Mantua, Ohio native will embark on her first season as a head coach when the Tigers open the season at Willoughby South on August 21.
