DIVERSITY COMMITTEE

At Lakeland Community College, fostering an understanding and respect for diversity both on the campus and in the community is an essential part of the college's focus; so much so, that diversity is listed as one of the college's Core Values.  The commitment to creating learning opportunities is reflected in many of the activities, classes, groups and events held on campus throughout the year.  The Diversity Committee plays a key role in administering programs and addressing challenges.

Committee Charge

 

PURPOSE
The purpose of the Diversity Committee is to advise the President regarding diversity and equal opportunity issues and to facilitate programs and services that meet the changing needs of individuals in a diverse community. 

FUNCTIONS
Responsibilities of the committee include:

1. Identify the strengths, resources, and needs of the college in matters of diversity. 
 
2. Assess and evaluate the progress of diversity on campus. 
 
3. Recommend proactive activities to address diversity issues of concern. 
 
4. Fund and endorse programs that will enhance diversity on campus. 
 
5. Oversee the development of programs and activities which foster equal opportunities for all. 
 
6. Review alleged patterns of discrimination. 
 
7. Recommend specific equal opportunity measures. 
 
8. Select recipient of the annual Diversity Award. 
 
9. Review Human Resources hiring practices report. 

 

MEMBERSHIP
Associate V.P. of Student Development & Dean of Students, Co-chair Appointed by President 
Non-administrator, Co-chair Elected by Committee 
Director for Human Resources Continuing Position 
Four (4) Administrator / Supervisory & Professional Members Appointed by President 
Five (5) Faculty Members Appointed by LFA 
Three (3) Staff Members Appointed by LSA 
Two (2) Students Appointed by LSG 
 
Length of Term - Faculty and staff members shall serve two-year staggered terms. 
 
Officers - Co-chairs: one appointed by the President, and one elected by the Diversity Committee. 
 
 
SUPPORT
 
The office of the Associate Vice President of Student Development & Dean of Students shall provide secretarial support.
