ABOUT

Recently, there were few opportunities for Lake County area residents to earn a four-year or graduate degree close to home. Since Lakeland's university center programs began on August 27, 2011, hundreds of area residents have enrolled at the Holden University Center to complete their bachelor's or graduate degrees.

When Lakeland had a levy on the ballot in 2010, the college promised to create a university center to address these needs and provided the necessary resources. The center would also add much needed classroom and laboratory space for Lakeland students and expand training opportunities for local businesses.

The levy passed, and as you will see, we kept our promise. A building was designed and constructed and partnership programs were established with local colleges and universities-all in less than a year.

The university center is named in honor of Arlene and Arthur Holden, long-time champions of higher education and Lakeland. The two-story building is 39,000 square feet and was designed specifically for students enrolled in Holden University Center degree programs. It is a very unique space that encourages collaboration and connectivity. The entire building is wireless. It features the latest technologies to provide a truly innovative teaching and learning experience.

The Holden University Center is a LEED certified building, which means it was built using strategies to conserve energy and water and to lower our operating costs. The building is very open and has many windows to let in natural light, which reduces our energy use. It also has LED lighting with room sensors, computer-controlled temperature, energy efficient windows, and a reflective roof.

The Holden University Center helps Lakeland meet its mission by allowing area residents to conveniently earn degrees, ensuring Lakeland students get into the classes they need, and helping area businesses meet the demand for qualified workers.

By removing of some of the barriers that have prevented area residents from getting their degrees and improving their lives, Lakeland's Holden University Center is transforming higher education in Lake County.
