English and Journalism at Lakeland strengthens students' critical analysis of both the diverse and universal in human experience, as embodied in language, literature and visual media, and as shaped by time and place, race and religion, gender and sexuality, class and personal history.

The department broadens students' understanding of the grammatical and rhetorical conventions of language and enhances their ability to write effectively, creatively and ethically in the personal, academic, professional and public spheres.

Upon successful completion of coursework, students will:
  1. Use information responsibly.
    1. The student will be able to recognize plagiarized material.
    2. The student will know how to use a standard documentation format.
  2. Compose a unified, well-developed essay.
    1. The student will develop a clear thesis.
    2. The student will provide support for the thesis.
