Poetry Contest

Each spring, the Arts and Sciences Division holds a poetry competition for students and community members.

Category 1 - High School Students
1st prize - $40
2nd prize - $25
3rd prize - $20

Category 2 - Lakeland Students
1st prize - $40
2nd prize - $25
3rd prize - $20

Category 3 - General Public
1st prize - $40
2nd prize - $25
3rd prize - $20

  • Prizes and certificates will be presented at the Literary Festival being held at the Holden University Center, Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 3-4 p.m.
  • Winners are invited to read their work at the awards ceremony.
  • Winning poems may be published. 
How to Submit Your Poem(s)
  1. Follow this link to pay the entry fee(s) online.
  2. Once payment is confirmed, email submission as a single-file attachment to tterry@lakelandcc.edu.

Submission Fee: $5
Submission Deadline: Friday, March 24, 2017.

Each entrant may submit one to three poems in each appropriate category. No single poem should be longer than two, typed pages. Poems must be previously unpublished. The competition is not open to Lakeland employees, but family members are welcome to submit.

Judge: 
The 2017 competition judge is Hannah Stephenson. Stephenson is a poet, editor and instructor living in Columbus (where she also runs a literary event series called Paging Columbus). She is the author of "Cadence" (which won the Ohio Chapbook Prize from the Wick Poetry Center), "In the Kettle, the Shriek," and series co-editor of "New Poetry from the Midwest." Her writing has appeared in "The Atlantic," "The Huffington Post," "32 Poems," "The Journal," and "Poetry Daily." You can visit her online at The Storialist (thestorialist.com).
